About a quarter-mile down a gravel road, the farm's entrance revealed an old home with a wrap-around porch, a cistern, a cattle trough, and an old cedar barn. The house was separated by a wire fence to keep the cattle out. As a boy, I lived there before moving to the city. When I returned as a young man in my 20s, I learned the house and barn had been razed and burned. All that remained was the trough and the wire fence, now overgrown with prairie grass and difficult to open. It was not a place of good memories. Yet, somehow, that old wire fence became a lesson that most changes are for the best.
