James Hetherington — Kinetic Steel Sculptor

1967 was the beginning of my path as an artist. I recall my joy in collecting and arranging old colored bottles to resemble nature.

    The Journey

While in High School and living on my own I began working in the oil patch learning firsthand what happens to the environment. Since then it has been my mantra "economizing Mother Nature's resources by sustainability".

Based in San Antonio, Texas, James Hetherington creates kinetic steel sculptures that blend industrial craft with natural beauty. His works range from monumental public installations like "The Beginning" at Brooks City-Base to kinetic wind sculptures incorporating renewable energy at the John Igo Branch Library.

Central to James's philosophy is the concept of transformation. His sculptures are designed to evolve over time—beginning life as polished, mirror-like surfaces that gradually develop the rich rust patina that has become his signature. This intentional aging process reflects his belief that art, like life, is meant to change and grow.

Sustainability is woven into every aspect of his practice. James works primarily with reclaimed steel, giving new life to materials that might otherwise end up in landfills. Each sculpture tells the story of its previous existence while reaching toward a new artistic purpose.
